Q: What is the difference between an electronic ballast and a magnetic core and coil?
A: Electronic ballasts, also known as "digital", utilize a internal microprocessor that converts a higher efficiency of energy to the bulb using less power from the ballast. The result is a higher quality bulb life, and increased output of light.

Q: Which lamps are recommended for use in the Lumatek e-ballast?
A: Lumatek ballasts work with all major brands of lamps. For superior performance and ultimate reliability Lumatek recommends using Lumatek High-Par Output HPS lamps with Lumatek ballasts.

Q: Which lamps are recommended for use in the Phantom and Lumatek digital ballasts?
A: Most lamp brands distributed by Hydrofarm are approved for use in the Phantom digital ballasts. Sun Pulse and Plantmax lamps are the preferred lamp brands for use in the Phantoms. NOTE: Many "blue", "super blue", or dual arc tube bulbs will work intermittently with Phantoms and Lumateks. Try to avoid using these bulbs with our digital ballasts.

Q: Why is my Hortilux bulb not working with my Lumatek or Phantom ballast?
A: Hortilux Blue Daylight Metal Halide bulbs are not compatible with Lumatek or Phantom digital ballasts. A magnetic ballast is recommended for these. If you have problems with other Metal Halide bulbs and our digital ballasts, try using a MH conversion bulb.

Q: Are Lumatek ballasts dimmable as well as multi-wattage?
A: In addition to being able to power different wattage lamps on Dial-A-Watt Lumatek ballasts you can also dim your lamp. Dimming can be a great way to deal with heat issues in your garden. It is important to remember that you can't run your lamps higher than their rated wattage as doing so could severely damage your lamp.

Q: When I change the power setting on a Dial-A-Watt Lumatek ballast does the input power change as well as the output power?
A: One of the main advantages of Lumatek's Dial-A-Watt technology is that both the input and output power change when you adjust the power setting on a Lumatek ballast. This is a great feature if you want to save energy when your plants are young and you need less light. A 1,000W Dial-A-Watt Lumatek ballast at the 750W setting uses 25% less electricity than it would at 1,000W.

Q: What is the Super Lumens setting and will it hurt my lamp if I use it?
A: The Super Lumens setting on Dial-A-Watt Lumatek ballasts produces up to 10% more light. Please note that the Super Lumens feature can only be used with the highest rated wattage lamp for your ballast. For example, if you have a 1,000W Dial-A-Watt Lumatek, the Super Lumens setting can only be used with a 1,000W lamp. Using the Super Lumens setting with a lower wattage lamp could damage your lamp. On the 400W Dial-A-Watt Lumatek there are two Super Lumens settings; one for a 250W lamp and one for a 400W lamp. Using the Super Lumens setting on your ballast will not damage your lamp.

Q: My bulb, ballast and reflector combination is not working. How can I fix this?
A: The problem might be a bad connection in the mogul socket. Make sure to disconnect the unit from the power supply, and then look inside the mogul socket for a metal tab. Pry this tab upwards a little bit to make better contact with the bulb base.

Q: Are my ballasts Generator-Ready?
A: All of the ballasts we sell are generator-ready, except for the UltraGrow E-ballasts. They are not recommended for use with a generator. Generator Ready ballasts include: Xtrasun Ballasts, Phantom Ballasts, Lumatek Ballasts, Super Grow Ballasts

Q: I have a 1000W ballast, can I use a 400W or 600W bulb in it?
A: As a general rule, ballasts can only be used with bulbs that are of the same wattage rating. A 1000W ballast can only be used with a 1000W bulb, a 400W with a 400W, etc. *This does not apply to the dimmable Lumateks, which can use a 600W bulb if dimming switch is set to 600W, etc. The Dial-A-Watt technology inside Lumatek ballasts gives them the ability to power different wattage lamps on the same ballast. If you have a resin sealed Lumatek 1,000W ballast you can use a 600W, 750W or 1,000W lamp in it. If you have a new Air Cooled Lumatek ballast you can use a 400W, 600W or 1,000W lamp in it.*

Q: Can an HPS ballast be used to power a metal halide bulb?
A: This is never recommended, the ballast and bulb type (wattage and HID bulb type) must match. Convertible ballasts, however, can be switched between MH and HPS modes. There is also the option of using a conversion bulb. This is a bulb that is designed to produce a MH spectrum on a HPS ballasts, or vice versa. Phantom digital ballasts can ignite HPS or MH bulbs, except for the 750W model, which is meant only for HPS.
